An updated paperback version of Laura book, containing additional letters, was re released by Harper in August of 2005. The newly surfaced letters were also consulted and woven into the current San Francisco version of the play. The show opened in 1994 and even spent two years in New York before finally coming to San Francisco this month. Chester was in the New York production of Love, Janice as well as a three city run in Louisville, Cleveland and Cincinnati.

I came to the teary realization, after the scene in which Hallett is sitting in a chair shooting up, that both the very famous Joplin and my mother were bright, sensitive, hard working young women whose struggles to come to terms with life ended in tragic early deaths. In that moment, Joplin life story became very personal for me.

The 36 year old Chester, a petite blonde New York City based actress who is one of two singers trading off the demanding singing part of the iconic blues rocker, explained prior to the show that she loves how Joplin commanded the band and was the consummate front person back then.
The production of Love, Janis (based on the best selling book by Joplin younger sister Laura) has been breathing new life to the late singer and cultural icon for more than a decade. The play serves as a symbol of the struggle of women in America in the late and early or, for that matter, the struggle of any one person to come to terms with what life has handed him or her.
Janis Joplin sister Laura Joplin wrote the best selling Love, Janis in 1992 and has called Chico home since 2001. Joplin chose to work with playwright Randal Myler after seeing his production on the life of Hank Williams.
Like the book, the stage version of Love, Janis is largely based on the articulate, soul searching and often funny letters that Joplin wrote to her parents and two younger siblings in small town Port Arthur, Texas (where she had often felt like an outcast growing up in the over the course of her meteoric rise to superstardom.
